Credit Cards Don’t Have to be the Enemy!

Credit Cards Don’t Have to be the Enemy!

Most people view credit cards as a necessary evil in today’s economy.  We need it, yet, we rely on it too much.  Well, with a little bit of management, responsibility, and better understanding of how credit works, credit doesn’t have to be our enemy.

Almost everyone out there has credit.  It’s how we use it that is important.  Unfortunately, not all of us learned to manage the credit temptations that are out there.  It’s a world of instant gratification.  We see something, we want it, we get it.  Haven’t you noticed how much more difficult it is to buy Christmas and birthday presents for your friends and family?  No one waits for anything anymore.  Even if we can’t really afford it, there’s always credit.

So, we have used credit to its very limits.  To reign it back in, we just need to practice a little restraint.  We don’t need everything we want right now.  It feels good to work hard for something or toward something.  Think of credit as a necessity when your washer and dryer blow up, or when it’s time to trade in the family car.  We all need to get away from that thinking that credit cards can be and should be used for everything.  This includes better managing our budgets and finances.

It’s not an overnight change, but it is a change that can make a huge difference in the long run.  It is truly the first step in eliminating your credit card debt.  Stop using credit casually.  Use cash, and if you don’t have the cash, don’t make the purchase.  It seems like a simple idea, but it’s actually very difficult for many of us to get our hands around.  It is something that you need to work at consistently.  Before you know it, you’ll be debt free.  A lot of that will be due to your ability to use your credit cards reasonably and responsibly.

Using credit cards responsibly can actually help you pay down your credit card debt.  You won’t get anywhere on your pay down plan if you don’t start using the cards reasonably – or stop using them all together!  If you don’t, then your pay-off will seem like an unattainable goal… it will just keep slipping through your fingers.

I recently had a little money problem and as soon as the issue hit my credit reports the credit card companies started upping my rates and lowering my limits! Fortunately I don’t carry a lot of debt on the cards, but I can see how this could easily spiral out of control.
