I’ve just started reading articles about credit cards because I’m planning to get one soon. Though as stated in this article there are people who can’t control the usage of their cards and in the end they did not realize that they are already bankrupt. I’m afraid that I would become one of them that’s why i need to read this kind of stuff.

My advice to my kids is to hold off on getting a credit card until you are established and even then, use with caution.

I agree wholeheartedly, consolidation using an unsecured card isn’t for everyone. You have to have a plan and you have to have realistic expectations. In the end, one of the hardest things for people to do is stop charging. That needs to be rule number one for this all to work.

I really enjoyed what you wrote. Being in massive amounts of debt is just too much for most people to handle. I work with a lot of people who have the worst time dealing with their debts. Its pretty tough to see.

Your absolutly right suze. This was my problem exactly. To me, buying “stuff” was almost a disease like alcholism. I quit smoking and the urge to buy is almost as bad. People have a need to buy, buy, buy and they need intervention. Overspending is a constant challenge because if you really want something you kid yourself in to thinking you have to have it now. The problem is “self control” can’t be taught.

I know each individual case is different, but what are the true benefits of consolidation over, say, settlement or even a bankruptcy? I wonder if there is a white paper out there with facts and figures about what method is best in a macroeconomic sense.

Self control is the only answer for people like this. You can show them hoe to get out of debt (education) just like you can take a horse to water but you can’t make it drink.
