With all the credit card offers that all of us get regularly in the mail, it seems like everyone is eager to extend us credit. For some of us, the lure of being able to buy the things we want right now rather than waiting until we actually have the money in the bank is too great to resist. If we are not disciplined with the amount of money we owe and the amount of different companies that we owe money to, we can get in some trouble. This is where and unsecured credit card debt consolidation loan could be very beneficial. There are of course some things to be aware of before you jump in and take on even more debt.
Consolidating credit card debt can be a two-edged sword, if the debtor is not careful and committed to getting out of debt, or at least reducing their asset to debt ratio. Many times a person with a lot of debt will find a source for an unsecured credit card debt consolidation loan, reducing their monthly payment significantly. Usually within a few months, without the large monthly payments they used to have, they will take out another credit card or two and find themselves right back where they started.
At this point it is easy to start using the new card to pay the unsecured credit card debt consolidation loan payment, and then take out another credit card in order to increase their purchasing power. This simply begins a vicious cycle of increasing their debt and this time there may be no unsecured credit card debt consolidation loan available.
Unsecured Credit Card Debt Consolidation Requires a Solid Plan!
There are reputable firms that can help with unsecured credit card debt consolidation, without taking out a loan. These companies can negotiate lower monthly payments with the credit card companies and the debtor makes the payment directly to this company. While the aggregate monthly payment will be less, it will take longer to pay off the total debt, but the additional income can be used for necessities instead of paying interest rates on the debt.
Most of the reputable agencies that offer unsecured credit card debt consolidation loans will only lend their clients money if they sign an agreement that they will not apply for any further credit or buy anything on credit until the loan they provide is paid in full. The United States government also offers a service that provides debt relief called Chapter 13 Bankruptcy. While is is an option, we implore you to make it one of your last options. While the government program will take care of your debt, your credit rating will be damaged for a long time to come. This type of program is good for those who simply can’t control themselves around offers of new credit. When the government steps in to help you, it makes it nearly impossible to get another credit offer in the short term which is just what some people need.

You are right in a way that filing bankruptcy should be your last option.
I am also agree with the fact that taking a new credit card or several debts to manage your current financial situation should be avoided at any cost.
Thanks for this article.

A lot of people use a second charge loan to consolidate credit card debt, but as you say it can be a double edged sword. People clear the debt get a lower payment but dont cut up the cards. Two years later they are back in the same position with more debtlooking for another secured loan to consolidate more credit card debt.

Some people should have their cards torn up, then frozen, then locked up in a bank 100 miles away. Credit is so easy to get that people just can not help themselves. They are like kids that eat too much candy. Maybe they should teach fiscal responsibility in schools!

I agree debt consolidation isn’t for everyone. But it’s an option worth considering for anybody with serious debt problems.

At some point we all need to be held accountable for our own actions. We need to learn from our mistakes, pick up the pieces and move on. After we fix our debt we need to use self control and stop putting ourselves into debt. We need to stop blaming others and look in the mirror. It’s just like dieting, take responsibility and learn to live in moderation. So many people are overweight, just like our debt.

Nice article!Very informative.Unsecured credit card debt consolidation is not for everyone as one of the disvantage is the payment of a higher interest as compared to the lower interest rate being offered by secured one.

I recently took a phone call from someone deeply in debt who was looking for a company to loan her money to pay off her debts. Some people will never be able to understand how to help themselves. But I think most people are grateful when they find a legitimate solution to help them pay off what they owe.

Self control is the only answer for people like this. You can show them hoe to get out of debt (education) just like you can take a horse to water but you can’t make it drink.

I know each individual case is different, but what are the true benefits of consolidation over, say, settlement or even a bankruptcy? I wonder if there is a white paper out there with facts and figures about what method is best in a macroeconomic sense.

Your absolutly right suze. This was my problem exactly. To me, buying “stuff” was almost a disease like alcholism. I quit smoking and the urge to buy is almost as bad. People have a need to buy, buy, buy and they need intervention. Overspending is a constant challenge because if you really want something you kid yourself in to thinking you have to have it now. The problem is “self control” can’t be taught.

Bankruptcy is financial tool. It will save the debtor a massive sum of money & help them become debt free quickly. But Avoiding the longer term negative consequences of bankruptcy.

I really enjoyed what you wrote. Being in massive amounts of debt is just too much for most people to handle. I work with a lot of people who have the worst time dealing with their debts. Its pretty tough to see.

I agree wholeheartedly, consolidation using an unsecured card isn’t for everyone. You have to have a plan and you have to have realistic expectations. In the end, one of the hardest things for people to do is stop charging. That needs to be rule number one for this all to work.
